Our Philosophy
At the Open Book Academy, we understand that tutoring is not just a form of academic assistance. We believe that tutoring can be a life-affirming and enriching act. We cultivate life-long learning and study skills and by practice, our aim is to guide students to understand the human experience through the Humanities – all reflecting back towards their school’s curricula. In doing so, we create skills that can translate to any academic level and discipline. What sets us apart from other agencies, is that our approach is rooted first in openness and kindness. This cultivates a safe learning environment where tutoring is catered specifically to your child’s academic, developmental, and social needs. We recognize that every learner is different. We also recognize the role the humanities play in shaping a person’s growth and development. By finding touchstones in the humanities, we form a common ground with our students. This creates long-lasting and meaningful relationships that enhance their critical thinking skills and the quality of their schoolwork. Most importantly, we help students to become confident, reflective writers who can analyze the past, understand the present, and communicate their ideas effectively for the future.
Who I Am
I have been an educator for over half a decade. I am currently a professor of Humanities and History at Foothill and De Anza College. I have taught high school English at Kehillah Jewish Day School and am a tutor for the Drew School. My most recent endeavors include collaboration on a historical graphic novel that was published by the Oxford University Press, writing articles for Bill Gates’ Open Education Resource Project, creating a graphic math history for the XQ Institute, and serving on the executive council for the World History Association. I teach from a pedagogy of openness and kindness, based on developing relationships that make students feel safe and empowered. I hold two Master’s degrees in Humanities and History from SF State, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from SF State. Teaching is not just my vocation, it’s the work that gives my life its greatest sense of meaning. Guiding students to discover their own confidence and potential is one of the most meaningful and fulfilling parts of my life. Teaching is were my purpose and my joy come together.
